Editorial Makeup Looks

Every week for the past five weeks at college, we have been given a task to complete. For the most part, these have been editorial looks based on magazine covers, fashion designers and different trends and techniques. Here are a few of the looks that I have created.

 Cirque de Soleil

For our first project, we were asked to create a makeup look suitable for a performance with the Cirque de Soleil. When I started researching ideas for this task, I immediately saw the bright colours and knew that colourful and bold was the way to go. I thought lines and contoured eyes were the way to go, so I sketched out the contours of my model's nose and brow and under her eyes. I used a flat shadow brush and black and brown eyeshadow to create depth, and used a fluffy blending brush with a bright red-pink shade for a smooth transition. For the lips, I used a bright lipstick and used the darker shadows to reverse ombre for an editorial effect. I then finished with gloss.

Blocking Brows and Vivienne Westwood

For our next project we had the task of blocking out eyebrows. As I adore drag makeup, I was very excited to attempt to do this look. I started off by brushing my model's brow hairs upwards and using a glue stick to hold them in place. I tried to keep them as flat as possible. I then kept applying layers of glue with a spatula for a smooth finish. I then powdered and applied a concealer and liquid foundation to match the model's skintone. After that I began my Vivienne Westwood inspired makeup look. When researching Vivienne Westwood, there were many images of bright coloured makeup and makeup with no rules. I decided to opt for using pink for contouring and using an excessive amount of illuminator and highlighter. I used the Sleek blush in Pomegranate, a shimmery cranberry shade to contour the cheekbones, forehead, inner eye socket and to go over and around the mouth area, to create an interesting look. I then applied some Stila lipgloss heavily over the lips to finish.

Spider Body Art

Our next task was Halloween themed - we were to paint a realistic spider on our arms. We followed a step by step, which focused on creating small dots of where things should be, as an outline, for future reference. We used face paints and a thin brush, and varied the amount of water and pressure we used to create the shading. I enjoyed this task because it didn't take very long and the end result made my boyfriend throw his phone out of his office when I sent it to him because he thought there was a real spider on his screen!

Statue Makeup, Hair and Body Art

This was a formative assessment in which we had 3 hours to create a full statue look. Immidiately I knew that I wanted to create a scary, broken statue. For the makeup and body I applied white face paint all over, used black for cracks with a fine liner brush, used black eyeshadow for contouring and stippled silver all over for a worn affect. I also applied glitter. For the hair, I wanted it to look like there was only some hair left from the head of the statue being broken, so I sectioned my model's hair into a small section and a larger section. For the smaller section, I backcombed and pinned it and sprayed it white. For the larger section, I applied a strong hold gel and combed the hair flat back to the scalp so that there was no body. I then pinned it and painted it black. We then had the models professionally photographed - I have edited my image slightly to make the broken parts look more intense.

Floral Tribal Look

The next week, the theme was floral tribal. I knew that I wanted to experiment with white and decided to do an autumn leaves inspired eye and lip, with a tribal eye and brow. I used Topshop U-Turn Duo-Chrome eyeshadow in the corner and under the eye with a shimmery red-brown from the Morphe 35O palette. I used the same Morphe colour on the lips. For the white, I used white face paint and a thin winged liner brush from Zoeva. I also painted a Primalash eyelash in white face paint to finish the look.

Wet Under the Sea Makeup

This week's challenge was to create a wet, Under the Sea makeup look for Vogue. We watched a demonstration on how to create a wet foundation look with oils and creams. I decided to mix grapeseed oil in with Illamasqua Skinbase 06. I also used Benefit High Beam to highlight and a dark Illamasqua Rich Liquid foundation to contour. I decided to go for bushy brows for a casual, high fashion appearance and turquoise eyes with a sandy cut crease. I applied lip gloss to the eyes and lips for even more of a shine.

So that's what I've been up to these past few weeks, please let me know what you think of my looks and keep an eye out for a new YouTube video coming soon!
