How I dye and shape my eyebrows at home

One of the most annoying things about being blonde, I find, is that I have pale AF eyebrows and eyelashes. This has been the absolute bane of my life as when my eyebrows are at their lightest (think bleached brows) I literally cannot see where they start and end to fill them in. Luckily, I found that tinting brows is a thing and that it's easy to do!

I began tinting my eyebrows when I was around 14/15, and I used the Eyelure Dyebrow kit in Brown. Then the trend of big, bushy eyebrows came and I started using the kit in Black. This made my once invisible eyebrows look reborn into thick, dark and glossy brows. The only downside is that I used to wake up the next day with red, itchy and flaky eyebrows with puffy eyes - a side effect to the Black Henna in the Kit. Needless to say I stopped using it for a while.

At college as part of my Media Hair and Makeup Level 2 course we learned how to professionally tint and shape eyebrows using eyebrow dye with a 3% developer. I loved this topic as one of the things that I enjoy so much about doing makeup is creating eyebrows. Immediately after having my eyebrows dyed, I knew that I loved the affects of the colour. It was glossy, dark and rich. My eyebrows were resurrected. The dye lasted even longer than the Eyelure kit - around 6-8 weeks before needing another tint. What's even better is that these dyes were from Salon Services and costed me just over a tenner (and have so far lasted me almost a year) - whereas one Eyelure kit was around £8 and lasted around 6 months.

Also, if you are wanting to dye/tint your eyebrows at home like me, always do a patch text 48hrs before each application (your reaction to the product can change depending on what medication you are on and other factors). Just mix up a small amount of dye and developer, put a 0.5cm dot of it befind an ear and in the fold of your elbow. If you experience any redness, tingling, swelling or any other irritation wash the product off, apply soothing lotion and discontinue use. If symptoms persist, seek advice from your GP just to be on the safe side.

Without further ado, here's how I dye and shape my eyebrows at home for a reasonably cheap price.

From Left to right: Eyelash Tint Developer (3%) £4.59, Lash Tint Black & Lash Tint Brown £3.99 each, Spooley (£2 from amazon for a pack of 100), Tweezers (£?, Ebay), Eyebrow Razor £2.99 (for a pack of three from Superdrug.

I should firstly start by saying that my eyebrows don't look particularly untamed because I don't have many stray hairs as I don't really grow much hair around my eyebrows. This is probably around 3/4 months of not touching my eyebrows at all (no dye/plucking).

Firstly, I begin by making sure that my eyebrows are completely clean, I have removed my makeup with a facial wipe and I use a cotton pad with Garnier Micellar Water to remove any remaining traces of oil and makeup on my eyebrows and eyelashes.

I then mix up the dye using a spooley. I use a ratio of 2/3 black to 1/3 brown (so that my eyebrows don't look too ashy) and mix into a paste. I then add enough developer so that I have a dye with a consistency I am comfortable with. I like my dye to be reasonably runny without it dripping, so that it reacts quickly and I don't need to leave it too long on my skin.

The amount of dye you need depends on how big your eyebrows are, I always tend to mix up too much just incase I need more. If I have a lot left over, I apply it to my eyelashes as the developer and dye is safe to use on lashes.

Don't worry about being exact with application, as if you cover a larger space, it will colour the fairer eyebrows that make makeup application look more textured so makes them more visible to remove later. This dye does stain the skin slightly after application but the tint on the skin will disappear after two washes.

To remove the dye, I simply soak a cotton pad in lukewarm water and wipe to remove the majority of the product, I then wipe again with Micellar water to remove any residual dye. These images were taken right after removal. As you can see, the dye has tinted parts of my skin underneath my eyebrows, but even so my eyebrows look much fuller, larger, thicker and darker.

Next, I washed my face with Neutrogena Pink Grapefruits Scrub. This is a gentle scrub and got rid of the dye on my skin. I then plucked any stray hairs and used my eyebrow razor to get sharp edges on the tail of my brow and to get underneath the brow to remove the thinner, finer hairs that create texture when applying eye makeup.

Here's some before and after pictures side my side to show the difference tinting and shaping makes.

Before: Pale basically non-existant eyebrows with no noticeable shape.
After: Dark, thick-looking eyebrows with a definite shape.
Before: Shape doesn't frame and lift the eyes, unnoticeable colour.
After: Bold, striking eyebrows that bring attention to the eyes and frame the face.
